Koreanspice Viburnum

—Viburnum carlesii

( Click here for voucher in printable PDF format )

Out of all the Viburnums, Koreanspice is one of the most fragrant! Their heavenly fragrance is the main reason for planting them in your garden. Deep pink flower buds appear in spring in snowball-like clusters later opening to beautiful white flowers. The fall season brings about purple-red foliage color along with clusters of red berries that in time turn to black. Definitely a very versatile shrub: woodland garden plant, specimen plant, foundation planting, borders, or group plantings.

Koreanspice Viburnums tolerate full sun and partial shade, but keep in mind that the more shade they receive the less flowers (and fragrance) you will get. They grow best in moist, well-drained soil, are drought tolerant, and are free of any major insect problems. While this wonderfully delicious shrub can grow to 8’ tall and wide, it can be easily maintained to a somewhat smaller size with annual pruning. It’s not an aggressive grower so it doesn’t need to be pruned very often — but if the mood strikes you the best time to prune is after it is done flowering allowing for new flower buds to form giving you blooms next year. This will keep your Koreanspice Viburnum looking very nice and full. Hardy to Zone 4.
