Deciduous Azaleas

—Azalea Weston’s & Lights Series

( Click here for voucher in printable PDF format )

If you ever walked into the garden center and saw some beautifully blooming shrubs in the nursery... chances are that some of them are Deciduous Azaleas. And before you decide not to try one (because you remember that sickly yellow one in your grandma’s garden)... think again! These awesome varieties are the “updated” version. A Deciduous Azalea can be used as a lovely specimen shrub in any garden or used as an accent in a woodland garden — very cool! They also attract butterflies and hummingbirds, a perfect addition to your “winged friend” garden too!

As you may already know, Deciduous Azaleas loose their leaves in the fall and when the time comes for the blooms to appear in spring or summer, the branches are still leafless. Should you feel the need to prune them, the best time to do so is after they are done flowering, as the leaves are starting to emerge. These wonderful Deciduous Azaleas are shade tolerant and can also do well in partial sun. All are hardy to Zone 5.

Deciduous Azaleas have come a long way... sure, you still see the typical orange and yellow Exbury azaleas in older gardens — but wait ‘til you set your eyes on these babies!
