Arborvitaes, or “Arbs” as we so lovingly call them, are somewhat of a gardening “staple.” Not sure what to plant along your property line? How ‘bout some Arbs? Need some height in a landscape bed? How ‘bout an Arb? Just can’t figure out what type of shrub to use for your “How to Create Topiary” class? How ‘bout an Arb? It can just be used for so many things!

The word “arborvitae” is actually Latin which means “tree of life.” Apparently the resin of the arborvitae has some medicinal value — who knew? Foliage of the Arb develops as flat sprays and the needles appear to be covering in scales. And their foliage is quite soft, not at all prickly as some evergreens tend to be.

Emerald Green Arborvitaes are one of the best upright evergreens available and definitely one to treasure, especially for those of you who don’t like to prune! Practically a maintenance-free evergreen, this one is just right for most landscapes out there. It has a narrow, compact growth habit with a mature size of 12’ tall and 4’ wide and its hardy to Zone 4.

Green Giant Arborvitae is another great selection of Arb. This pyramidal evergreen is a vigorous grower with a rich green color that lasts throughout the winter. If you’re looking for a tall, dense shrub — this is the one for you! They can grow to 40’ tall and 12’ wide and are a wonderful choice for use as a privacy screen, border planting, or specimen plant. Green Giants are also resilient when it comes to pests and disease — just another reason why this Arb is a Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Gold Medal Award winner (plants recognized for their outstanding merit)! Hardy to Zone 5.

Arborvitae are fast growing and with so many different varieties available, you almost have no choice but to plant at least one in your garden. Emerald Greens and Green Giants like to be planted in full sun, but they tolerate light shade as well. They grow in practically any soil type but prefer moist soil as long as its well-drained. As far as pruning goes, the Emerald Green Arb rarely (if ever) needs it. The Green Giant Arb on the other hand, which can produce one to two feet of new growth per year, can be sheared annually since it grows so fast (preferably in March).
