Do you know how interesting Willows really are? For example, Willows have a long history of medicinal uses. Salicylic Acid is found in the bark of Willows (Salix) and Aspirin is the chemical copy of salicylic acid, used for the treatment of fever and pain. On a different note, in ancient times Willows were associated with magic and magic wands are actually made of Willow wood! In the interest of our winged friends — Willow leaves are considered food for many native butterfly larvae; and Goldfinches and other birds like to nest in shrubby forms of Willow. So much intriguing information!
Now there are over 350 known species of Willow out there. Most common would probably be Weeping Willows and Pussy Willows. Dappled Willows, however, deserve more recognition! The variegated foliage is absolutely breathtaking with colors of white, pink and green. You’ll receive the best show of color when planted in full sun, but this Willow will also tolerate light shade. The stems of the Dappled Willow even turn red in winter — providing interest to your garden for yet another season. Hardy to Zone 5, this vigorous grower will also benefit (and receive better foliage color) from an annual pruning. Also be sure to keep it watered during the first year after planting until it is well established. Fertilizing once a year in early spring will also give it a boost heading into another growing season.
Dappled Willows, as well as other types of Willow, should never be planted too close to septic fields, water pipes or sewers — their root system can cause some major problems. But Willows can be planted along the borders of streams and other waterways to protect banks from erosion. Their interlacing root system keeps the soil from washing away too readily. Contrary to popular belief — you don’t need wet conditions to grow Willows in your garden. Granted they do prefer moist soils, but will do okay in average soil as well. An excellent accent plant, Dappled Willow would be a welcomed addition to any garden!
